Transforming identities – Urban heritage in Testaccio

The aim of the project is primarily to gain insight into the processes that are shaping the contemporary urban identity of the neighbourhood of Testaccio. Located in the outskirts of Rome’s historical centre, Testaccio has formed the backdrop for a number of transformations from antiquity until today. From the 20th century and onwards, the neighbourhood has been known mainly as a working class district, largely dominated by the slaughterhouse and the surrounding businesses. The industrial identity of Testaccio has slowly faded since the slaughterhouse closed down in the 1970’s, and contemporary Testaccio has been designated as an arena for trying out new strategies concerning cultural heritage management and cultural activities in general. Today a number of different cultural organisations are established in Testaccio, and have come to claim an important place in the urban landscape. I aim to investigate in what way the cultural heritage of Testaccio is used in presenting the district today, and how cultural projects can help regenerate an urban landscape in transformation.
