The Swedish Institute in Rome 1925–1950

Frederick Whitling

Frederick Whitling defended his doctoral thesis, entitled The Western Way. Academic Diplomacy: Foreign Academies and the Swedish Institute in Rome, 1935–1953, at the European University Institute (EUI, Department of History and Civilization), Florence, in 2010. He is now engaged in the project of editing a history of the Swedish Institute in Rome (1925–1950), originally written by the now deceased researchers Erland and Ragnhild Billig, grant holders at the Swedish Institute in Rome during the Second World War. The Billig manuscript is planned as a potential volume in the Swedish Institute in Rome publication series Acta Instituti Romani Regni Sueciae. The publication of the Billig manuscript, which can be seen as an important link in the chain in the distinct Swedish-Italian context represented by the Swedish Institute in Rome, would constitute an important contribution to the understanding of Swedish classical studies in historical perspective, as well as of Swedish neutrality and the role of the classical tradition before, during and after the Second World War.
